Week 4: Quickstep

Aliona and Jay performed a fast, energetic quickstep to “My Generation” by The Who

Craig: Just too many mistakes, sadly 5
Darcey: It’s such a shame you messed up. But don’t worry about this, Aliona gave you a very challenging quickstep and I know you can come back next week. 6
Len: It’s a shame because these things happen. It’s a very fast dance, there’s a lot to think about, and your feet were doing more than your brain could handle. 7
Bruno: In theory, this should have been a barnstormer. In practice, there were quite a few buts. 7

Week 3: Jive

This week, Aliona and Jay performed an energetic Jive to Misirlou/You Never Can Tell from Pulp Fiction.

Craig: that is a level of technique we have never seen, ever. 9
Darcey: I’ve never seen a jive like that. 9
Len: Don’t worry about Pulp Fiction, I’ll tell you a fact, that is the best dance this season. 9
Bruno: Finally, the blockbuster everyone was waiting for! You outdone and out-danced John Travolta! Best dance ever! 10

    Week 2: Waltz

Week 2 and Aliona and Jay performed a stunning Waltz to See The Day by Dee C Lee.

Craig: Your thumb was sticking up … but all the rest was danced well. 7
Darcey: I’m blown away. The ability you have to understand the style and achieve the technique and romance. You are going to be one special dancer 8
Len: As you moved across the floor I though … Jay’s Fluid! I’ve been doing this a long time and it takes a lot to get me excited. I’m excited 8
Bruno: It was great. Plus footwork, frame, floorwork … Jay you’re here to stay 8

    Week One: Cha Cha Cha

Tonight, after an amazing opening professional routine (to my favourite song!!), Aliona and Jay performed a cheeky Cha Cha Cha to Reach Out, I’ll Be There by Human Nature and currently sit in joint 3rd place on the leaderboard.

Craig: I also like the way you can isolate your body, you did a lovely body roll there, it was all very neat and very tidy. The only thing I would say to add something to that is showmanship. I just felt that you were’t really living the experience I felt like you were just dancing the steps. 5
Darcey: Your posture, your stance, you gave strength and direct, you were leading her, she wasn’t in control you were in control of the dance. It was brilliant. 8
Len: Jay McGuiness, you’re like a glass of Guiness: full-bodied and you got a lot of froth on top! Don’t you go anywhere, you’re wanted. 7
Bruno: Oh Jay! I’m glad you came! I’m telling you, you have the potential to be a great hit on the dance floor. 7

    SCD 13 Launch Show

Even though it had been reported in the press we decided we would wait until after the Launch Show had aired before publishing Aliona’s partner for this series of Strictly Come Dancing: JAY MCGUINESS!! What a brilliant pairing! We’re sure that we’ll be seeing some fantastic rountines from these two in the coming weeks!

Fun-loving Jay McGuiness is best known as one fifth of the massively successful boyband The Wanted. Since their 2010 debut eponymous named album was released, the band have had major success all over the world, including two UK number one singles with All Time Low and Glad You Came.

The group’s second album, the platinum-selling Battleground (2011), saw their profile in the US and Canada go through the roof. This led to the band moving to LA in 2013, where they starred in their very own reality series on the American showbiz channel E! entitled The Wanted Life. The series documented the boys as they recorded their third album, Word of Mouth, and prepared for a huge world tour.

Jay was born in Newark, near Nottingham in 1990, and from a very early age he loved to sing and dance in front of the mirror with his four siblings, including his twin brother.

Jay pursued his love of performing by attending the Charlotte Hamilton School of Dance in Newark. Unfortunately for the young Jay he was bullied by his classmates for expressing an interest in ballet!

As his love for the performing arts grew he attended the prestigious Midlands Academy of Dance and Drama in Nottingham. At the age of 19, Jay randomly searched for auditions in Google; he got two results back, one for a circus and one for a new band. After impressing pop impresario Jayne Collins, the force behind The Saturdays, he was chosen to join up with Nathan Sykes, Tom Parker, Siva Kaneswaran and Max George and The Wanted were formed, and the rest as they say is history.

Since The Wanted announced a hiatus after six years of whirlwind success, Jay has had time to concentrate on his hobbies, which include reading, playing console games, gardening and popping to the pub. He also loves animals, and even has a pet lizard.

Jay has plenty of experience in performing in front of thousands of screaming fans, but will he hold his nerve with the gaze of our four judges upon him?
